Long imagined as inhospitable, mysterious, or dangerous, wetlands occupy an unstable space within the cultural imagination. swamp studies explores wetlands at twilight, a time when visual cues shift and change the landscape. As distinctions between water and land, figure and ground, begin to dissolve, these paintings invite viewers to slow down and attend to a landscape that requires slow viewing. In swamp studies, alligators appear at rest, submerged, or moving slowly through the water. They are engaged in ordinary behaviors rather than dramatic displays of predation, resisting narratives that reduce them to symbols of threat. Instead, they emerge as inhabitants of a complex ecosystem whose lives exceed the stories humans most often tell about them.
